"DES MOINES, IOWA, 9:10 p.m.: Polk County Republican Chairman Ted Sporer spent most of his day chasing MoveOn PAC members away from polling places. He claims members of the organization were engaging in electioneering and handing out campaign literature in the doorway of at least one polling place.
At one point, Sporer threatened to call the police on one protestor, but the man in question left (not before adding, "Fucking Republicans," however). Polk County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Michael Mauro says Sporer is justified in removing MoveOn members, and adds that election officials have been running them off "all day long." Mauro believes the problem has subsided, but if it continues, the police will be called. Iowa law requires those politicking to stay 300 feet away from polling places.
Also, at Merrill Middle School in Precinct 71, a member of MoveOn was allegedly acting as a poll watcher, sifting through slips to find out who had voted. In Iowa, it is illegal for anyone other than election officials, peace officers, and party members to act as observers. "They left very easily, and they were cordial," says Chad Nicholl, a Republican poll watcher and an attorney. "They feigned ignorance pretty well."
