City Journal, gran revista sobre temas urbanos editada por el Manhattan Institute, presenta un interesante artículo sobre el nuevo clima cultural en las universidades americanas.
Explica cómo los estudiantes se han vuelto conservadores en muchos temas. Ahora están más en contra de la acción afirmativa, del incremento de impuestos, de la acción militar en Irak y apoyan al matrimonio como institución para tener familias fuertes... sin embargo, de forma general, los jóvenes conservadores no apoyan la discriminación contra gays y lesbianas que es fomentada por las iglesias y el partido repúblicano:
"... for most of the conservative students I interviewed, traditional values did not extend to homosexuality. Though few support gay marriage, fewer still want the Constitution amended to ban it, and most are okay with state-sanctioned civil unions for gays. “I don’t buy the prevalent argument that recognizing gay unions would undermine the institution of marriage,” says Vanderbilt sophomore Anne Malinee, the strongly pro-life editor of the Vanderbilt Torch, the school’s conservative monthly. “Of all the issues elected officials could be focusing on, why this?” Similarly, Bucknell history and economics major Charles Mitchell, culturally conservative in many respects, isn’t worried about gay marriage. “I believe that homosexuality is a sin, because that’s what the Bible says, but I also believe that if two people of the same sex love each other and can get a priest to marry them, the propriety of that is none of the state’s business.”
¿O será que ven como algo tradicional la no discriminación? A fin de cuentas, si una pareja del mismo sexo se quiere casar, es un acto conservador en el actual clima donde abunda la desunión familiar no? Sí, las universidades americanas están cambiando hacia la derecha, pero parece que es una nueva derecha, y parece que el establishment conservador aún no se da cuenta.
